Looking for a Good Local Curry Spot in the Fuji Five Lakes Area

While traveling around the Fuji Five Lakes, I found myself craving something warm, filling, and flavorful — and that led me to start looking for a good local curry place.
Not a chain restaurant or tourist spot, but somewhere that locals actually go.

That’s when I came across Itoriki, a small but well-loved curry shop in Fujiyoshida.
I decided to stop by and see what it had to offer — and I’m glad I did.

What Kind of Place Is “Itoriki”?

Itoriki is a classic local spot in Fujiyoshida, operating as a casual set meal restaurant by day and izakaya by night.
From the outside, it doesn’t look particularly modern — in fact, it has that nostalgic, been-there-for-years kind of charm.
And that’s exactly what makes it feel authentic.

Inside, you’ll find a mix of tatami seating and counter space, making it suitable whether you’re eating solo or with a small group.
The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with locals chatting quietly over their meals.

The restaurant is run by a friendly husband-and-wife duo who give the place the vibe of an old-school Japanese diner.
The lunch menu is surprisingly large, offering everything from fried chicken and hamburg steak to ramen and other hearty dishes — but what really stands out here is the curry.

If you’re into no-frills, locally loved food joints, Itoriki is definitely worth a stop.

Curry Review – Flavor, Balance, and Just the Right Kick

Itoriki offers an impressive seven types of curry, ranging from spicy to mild, with options like coconut, pork, and beef.
With so many choices (and a photo menu to help), I decided to go with the master’s recommendation — the coconut curry.

The flavor was fantastic: a perfect balance of mild sweetness and gentle heat.
Even if you’re not a fan of spicy food, this one has just enough kick to keep it exciting, without overwhelming your taste buds.
It felt like the kind of curry that even a first-timer could enjoy, and still feel like they’re getting something authentic.

The portion size was just right — not too heavy, not too light, making it a great choice for lunch.
The curry also came with a side of miso soup, which was a nice surprise and likely a welcome touch for travelers wanting to experience a Japanese-style meal.

And the rice? It soaked up the curry beautifully.
Before I knew it, my plate was completely clean.

Can Tourists Visit Itoriki Comfortably?

Is It Tourist-Friendly?

Yes — absolutely!
When I visited, there were actually a few other international travelers eating there as well.
While the shop is definitely local in atmosphere, it’s still very welcoming for tourists, and I’d confidently recommend it as a hidden gem for visitors looking to try real Japanese curry.

What About Parking and Access?

There are a few parking spaces right in front of the shop, but be aware that the area is a bit tight — if you’re not confident with narrow parking spots, just take it slow.
That said, Itoriki is located about a 15-minute walk from Fujisan Station, so it’s totally accessible even without a car.

Is There English Support?

The shop is run by an older couple who are very kind, but English communication may be limited.
When I visited, there was no English menu, so I recommend using a translation app or pointing at the photos on the menu.

That said, there were handwritten signs in English on the walls, such as “Cash Only,” which shows they’re aware of international visitors.
And with more foreign tourists visiting these days, there might even be an English menu by now!
